Guidelines for Success with a Teen’s Oral Health


People often get the last of their adult teeth during their teenage years. Unfortunately, some teeth may not grow in correctly, or there might not be enough space. Typically, with wisdom teeth growing in, teens are at an increased risk for misalignment issues, infections, and tooth decay. With the addition of these new teeth, it is important to always brush twice daily and floss at least once per day.

The power of peer pressure among teens is real and very strong. As we come into our own as young adults, many individuals want to become socially acceptable and are willing to bend to the will of others. Bad habits such as smoking and doing drugs begin to take hold. Not only can these habits contribute to severe health issues, but they can destroy your mouth as well.

Another bad oral health habit that often comes from peer pressure is mouth jewelry. Typically, mouth jewelry such as lip and tongue rings is made of hard plastic or metal, both of which can chip and crack teeth easily. If the item is knocked loose, it can also end up as a choking hazard.

One of the most common activities that teens participate in is sports, including contact sports. In many of these activates, oral accidents and injuries are common. If you are participating in any sport or activity, be sure to wear the appropriate safety gear, including face masks, mouth guards, and head gear.
